NFW YORK -THE LOWER EAST SIDE- September 2001 JESSE GALVEZ and PEDRO
ANTUNES have teamed up to open Galleria J. Antonio again. The longtime
Greenwich village friends have decided to bring back the J. Antonio magic that brought
Vogue, Harpers, Bazaar- Famous and Infamous women like Sybil Bruncheon to
Christopher Street in the 80's.
Jesse is quoted saying: Why crawl? When you can walk-Why walk? when you can
skip-Why skip?- When you can run--Why run? When you can -fly!!!!
When I helped build Henri Bendel and J.J. Elway on Fifth Ave in the early 70's, I
was crawling around Fashion Accessories and Jewelry.
When I worked with Bob Gindi in the late 70's at Madison Avenue & East 68th St, I was
walking through Fashion Accessory history.
In the 80's Jose Antonio and I opened J. Antonio Inc. on Christopher Street NYC, we
skipped lightly through the world of Fashion Accessories, Crafts, and Jewelry.
When I opened The Watch Doctor with Joe Sema in Seattle Washington in 1991, I
was running through the Northwest and learning about, Watches- Clocks & and Glass.
Now in 2001 opening Galleria J. Antonio at 47 Ave A, New York. will make me FLY.
"FLY". Why use that adjective????
Flying describes how elated I feel to find an 1100 sq. ft space with huge windows in the
heart of The Lower East Side (Loisaida) close to where I grew up and still live. After
Jose Antonio died of aids related symptoms in 1989 and living in Seattle Washington all
those years. It feels great to be back home!!!!!!!!!!!!
I get a chance to surround myself with award winning craft people that I have known for
30 years. and some new ones I met recently, all over the United States.
I get a chance to work with my best friend since the 1980's Pedro Antunes who worked
16 years for the Vegetable Garden on Bleeker and Carmine and dated my manager
Anthony Bueno Garcia for 10 years. then later worked @ the landmark and original
BALDUCCI.
I get a chance to meet new people that have a dream and need to be inspired by the
colors, shapes and excitement I know how to bring to retail and reunite with old loyal
friends all over New York.
I get a chance to get dressed up, open the door, put on the lights, and say "Welcome,
Can I help Ya????"
